Spencer Clements and Gary Sova have written two books on the topic of dealing with youth violence.  These resources are based on their work to help schools create safe teaching and learning environments.

Combating School Violence: A  Handbook of Proactive Strategies. Practical Interventions for Managing Disruptive Students, Conflicts, Gangs and Safety Issues.  This publication discusses specific techniques such as: 
- effective communication skills with disruptive students.
- making parent/teacher phone calls that gain support
  from the parent.
- conducting behaviour meetings with difficult parents
  that result in positive change.
- intake meetings for high-risk students that minimize the
  opportunity for misbehaviour.
- the role of mediation in a school-wide process.
- interventions with violent and non-compliant students  
- developing school rules that are positive and specific
  discipline
- letters that can maximize family support
- intervening with gangs in the school

The second manual is titled Resolving Conflict in the Schools:  A Practical Approach to Setting Up Mediation Programs in the Schools.  This manual give a complete overview to set up conflict manager programs and peer mediator programs in the school setting.  Step by step procedures and comprehensive lesson plans are included.  As well the manual gives detailed information on:

  • presentations to the classes when introducing the program.
  • a guide to selecting students for training.
  • ideas for scheduling the mediators for duty.
  • specific lesson plans for conflict managers and peer mediators
  • graduation certificates
  • incentives to keep the program strong
  • along with graphics, student scenarios, and games.

The third manual is titled Dealing with Street Gangs:  Changing Public Outrage into Action is currently in development.  This manual is based on the authors extensive work with schools on the issue of gang involvement and it's effects on the school and neighbourhood environment.  Some topics that will be included are:

  • the Canadian Police Services definition of a gang and the criteria for involvement.
  • reasons why our youth join street gangs
  • identifying suspected gang members through clothing and paraphernalia
  • analyzing gang graffiti
  • security planning for schools.
  • interventions for schools, parents, and communities.

Dealing With Street Gangs will be ready for distribution in the near future.
